Spidey swings from page to stage in Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark

Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark – the on-again, off-again musical set to hit Broadway stages – is back. The upcoming show, with music and lyrics by U2′s Bono and The Edge, follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider. This bullied science geek, suddenly endowed with astonishing powers from the spider’s bite, soon learns that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character. Originally penned as a book by Julie Taymor and Glen Berger, the musical takes the Marvel Comics superhero to the stage, starring Reeve Carney as Peter Parker and Spider-Man.  Now fans can grab tickets in a special pre-sale offer through August 18th.  Check out the below poster for more details! The Guardians of Childhood gets a new release date from DreamWorks Animation

There’s a lot of shuffleboard being played with animated movies. Monsters, Inc. 2 has a new date, Beauty and the Beast 3D was pulled, and now it appears DreamWorks Animation has followed suit, changing the release date of their upcoming film The Guardians of Childhood (not to be confused with Guardians of Ga’Hoole’s Legend of the Guardians). In an effort to combat the mega popular Twilight Saga franchise and their upcoming Breaking Dawn, The Guardians moves from opening November 2nd 2012 to opening on November 21st 2012. The film features a group of heroes from various childhood tales: Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, a Genie, the Sandman, and Jack Frost. The group joins together in an effort to stop Pitch the Boogeyman from sending the world into “eternal darkness”. The CG animated comedy, “a contemporary fairytale”, is based on the books by William Joyce. (more… )

Marvel Knights Animation presents Astonishing X-Men: Gifted

Looks like motion comics are becoming all the rage! Just a few weeks after we announced the Jonah Hex motion comic from the DC Universe, Marvel strikes back featuring an X-Men title. The animated DVD, Astonishing X-Men: Gifted, is a production from Marvel Knights Animation and Shout! Factory, sporting Joss Whedon’s and John Cassaday’s team of mutants. Marvel claims the film, due for release on September 28th, will “remain true to the heritage of panel-by-panel graphic storytelling, with groundbreaking visuals, sensational soundscapes and, of course, the explosiveness of the Mighty Marvel Universe.” (more… )

4Kids teases Toonzai debut on The CW4Kids

With the summer heating up through August, cartoon blocks have begun ramping up their fall premieres; new toons, new fun, and (for some) a whole new look. From FoxBox to 4Kids.tv to The CW4Kids, there have been a number of variants in the 4Kids lineup, and this year will be no different. The new block, dubbed “Toonzai”, will debut in just a few weeks, but the promos have already started to spill out! We got word of the name-swap a few months back, and are just now getting official looks at both the logo and the rumored lineup, set to include Cubix, Sonic X, TMNT Back to the Sewer, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, and Dinosaur King, for starters. Nickelodeon Studios taps Oktobor Animation for The Penguins of Madagascar

As the world of CG animation grows by leaps and bounds, there has become a larger need for quality CG studios, giving movies and animated TV toons the polish that they need. Omnilab Media and Oktobor are no slouches in this field, joining together to form Oktobor Animation. Working along with Backyard Animation Pictures, this mega studio will become a dominant force for CG animation, leading the way with Nickelodeon Studios’ hit series The Penguins of Madagascar. The plan is to balloon the studio to over 120 artists and producers in the next 12 months, then 300 by 2014.
