The Smurfs get Papercutz to debut The Purple Smurf
The Smurfs; lovable, joyful little critters who gleefully sing the day away. Seems like the perfect little symbol of happiness, right? Well, now imagine that one of them is all twisted and evil and bitter – and most alarmingly, a blue-less purple. Then he bites another Smurf, turning him the same kind of evil and purple. Then another. And another. Soon, it’s a whole horde of zombie-like evil Smurfs, aiming to take over all of Smurfkind. Horrifying, right?? Well, such is the tale of The Purple Smurf, or as it was originally known in France, Les Schtroumpfs Noirs. It’s an epidemic even Gargamel couldn’t have dreamed up, and one only Papa Smurf could figure a way out of. The original story was released by Peyo, nearly 50 years ago, then animated in the Saturday morning toon some 20 years ago, and replayed on Cartoon Network’s Boomerang about 5 years ago. Now, Papercutz is re-releasing the original graphic novel in English for the first time, along with other Smurf adventures, like The Smurfs and the Magic Flute. With Sony and Columbia’s hybrid CG Smurfs movie due out next August, it looks like Smurf fever is spreading everywhere! Let’s just hope its not the purple kind. (more… )

Luken Communications and RTV (aka Retro Television Network) has big plans for the upcoming year. The company aims to add a ton of content to a new network aimed at classic TV and animation fans. Luken has already inked a number of deals with Classic Media to start filling those gaps, for which Classic Media was more than happy to provide. Included in the mix are: Richie Rich, Casper, The Lone Ranger, Mr. Magoo, Secret of Isis, Zorro, Shazam, Lassie, Dick Tracy, and Fraidy Cat. Hannah-Barbera’s Muttley snickers into Boomerang’s Boomeroyalty
That laugh. That laugh! For years, cartoons have had some definitive noises, catchphrases, and sound effects. From Homer Simpson’s “D’oh!” to Pikachu’s “Pika!” One classic sound effect that has been heard thousands of times over the past 40 years is that dirty, out-of-breath sounding laugh made famous by Dick Dastardly’s dog, Muttley. The cartoon pair, who appeared together in Hannah-Barbera’s classics like Wacky Races and Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, are icons of the animated world. Pink Panther and Pals takes over Cartoon Network’s Boomerang
It was just a few months ago that ToonBarn got the jump, announcing the debut of Pink Panther and Pals. Now, Cartoon Network is bringing the slyly cool, fuschia-hued cat to the world in this latest cartoon incarnation. The series stars a teenaged Pink Panther in an all new set of adventures across the Boomerang channel. But he doesn’t come alone; Ant & the Aardvark and bully Big Nose are along for the ride. As he was in the 60s, the Pink Panther remains silent throughout the show, staying true to the classic DePatie-Freleng Panther shorts. (more… )

Josie and the Pussycats on Boomerang’s Boomeroyalty Weekends
Cartoon Network’s sister network Boomerang is helping ramp up the summer time fun this year! During the month of July, the network is pumping out Boomeroyalty weekends with some of the greatest Hanna-Barbera toons in the company’s history! For example, every Saturday and Sunday, fans can tune in to see the classic Josie and the Pussycats toon, based on the original Arichie Comics series. Boomerang offers a Captain Planet and the Planeteers marathon on Earth Day
Hoping to make a difference this year for Earth Day, Cartoon’s cousin Network (sister network? brother?) Boomerang (Australian brother?) will offer viewers a special 12-hour marathon of Captain Planet and the Planeteers; perhaps the Earth-friendliest superhero squad of all time. The marathon will run this Saturday, April 17th, from 8am to 8pm, kicking off with a two-part episode called “Summit to Save Earth”. The series made its original debut in 1990, based on an idea by creator Ted Turner, following 5 kids from around the world. The kids, Kwame, Wheeler, Linka, Gi, and Ma-Ti, use the powers of Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart to form Captain Planet. Take a look at the show’s intro (more… )

Pokemon heads over to Cartoon Network’s Boomerang
Can you believe Pokemon is closing in on a 15 year anniversary? That’s right, the series that introduced a legion of American fans to the world of anime is now considered a “classic” as far as cartoons go. The series is joining Cartoon Network’s Boomerang channel, where it will air daily at 6:30pm, give you an opportunity to scream “Gotta catch’em all!” from the beginning. The show kicks off with the Adventures of Orange Island edition of the original series, beginning a string of more than 600 episodes. Gotta watch’em all! (more… )

The Garfield Show season two
Mediatoon and Dargaud Media are hard at work on the second season of The Garfield Show. The CG animated series premiered last year on Cartoon Network in the US, France 3, and Boomerang UK overseas, and has received a very strong following. The toon is based on the Garfield comic strip, created by Jim Davis, featuring the lovable (yet hefty) cat, who is fond of lasagna and sleeping, but certainly not Mondays. The Garfield Show is co-written by Mark Evanier, who also wrote most of the episodes for Garfield’s earlier cartoon series, Garfield and Friends, which aired in the 90s – notedly why voices from that series return in the one one; Frank Welker, Julie Payne, and Gregg Berger.
