Disney releases The Black Cauldron: 25th Anniversary Special Edition
In 1985, there was no Toy Story. There was no Finding Nemo, no Beauty and the Beast, no Incredibles, no Lion King, no Cars, no Little Mermaid. The heyday of the Disney Studio had passed into a bit of a darker time, perhaps best documented in the early parts of the Waking Sleeping Beauty documentary. However, the time was not without its stories, and Disney was still hard at work on their epics. One such dynamic creation was the Black Cauldron, the 25th theatrical animated presentation based on Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain book series. An evil Horned King, a demonic Black Cauldron, a world in peril, with only a handful of young-yet-noble heroes to save the day: Taran, Princess Eilonwy, Fflewddur Fflam, and Gurgi. Now, 25 years later, Disney is re-releasing the story on DVD as The Black Cauldron: 25th Anniversary Special Edition, set to hit stores on September 14th. Bleach The Movie: Memories of Nobody and Bleach The Movie 2: The Diamond Dust Rebellion rock Adult Swim
Adult Swim gets a lot of special features that simply can’t be found anywhere else. Recently, the late-night segment of Cartoon Network had one of its most impressive showings ever, airing two Bleach anime films back-to-back. First up was Bleach: Memories of Nobody, a 2006 film of the anime and manga Bleach series, which has only aired once before on Adult Swim, back on September 5th, 2009. The second film was the Bleach sequel, The Diamond Dust Rebellion, aired immediately afterward – nearly a full month before it will be available in Europe on DVD. Truly a great day for TOON fans, and an equally great day for Cartoon Network, which reaped the reward of big ratings for the double feature. Hopefully, that will make them anxious to repeat it! Disney’s Toy Story 3 tops DreamWorks’ Shrek 2 as top earning animated film
For 6 years now, Shrek 2 has remained on top of the mountain as the all-time highest grossing animated film, dethroning the Lion King after Disney’s animated classic had a 10 year reign. As of this past week, there’s a new boss in town, Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 3. The 3D sequel juggernaut has earned over $920 million worldwide in the box office (over $400 million locally) besting Shrek’s $919.8 million. As the speed is dying down a bit since the June 18th launch, experts are unsure whether the film will have the legs to reach the $1 billion global plateau. However, the film is already Disney/Pixar’s highest grossing weekend with $109 million, and holds the title of the biggest June opening ever. And thankfully for us at home, Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release Toy Story 3 on Blu-ray and DVD on November 2, 2010. (more… )
