Warner Bros. brings Looney Tunes’ Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote back to the big screen
Years ago, movies were big events. OK, they’re still big events now, but back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, they were huge events. Sometimes, it would be a double feature, showing two movies instead of one, and more often than not, news reels and even cartoons would run before and after the showings. That’s, mostly, how the world was introduced to Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes pals. Taking a cue from this blast from the past, Warner Bros. Animation plans on reviving the in-theater toons with brand new, 3D animated shorts before relating Warner Bros. movies. The movies include July 30th’s Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, September 24th’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, and December 17th’s Yogi Bear. First up to bat; the classic chase between Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote – never seems to work out too well for the latter. Beep beep! (more… )

Happy Cinco de Mayo from ToonBarn
Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for “fifth of May”, is one of the larger celebrations in Mexico. While it is specifically associated with Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín and the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla, the date is mostly known as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Toon-wise, perhaps the most famous Mexican character of them all is Speedy Gonzales, known as the fastest mouse in all of Mexico. The Warner Bros. character is one of the many Looney Tunes stars, boasting incredible speed, energetic voice, and over-sized yellow sombrero. Soon, he’ll also be known as the latest animated character to receive a hybrid-style makeover on the big screen, with comedian George Lopez providing the voice. Waking Sleeping Beauty
The history of beautiful animated films is no perfect fairytale. Sure, now we have Finding Nemo, Coraline, Kung Fu Panda, and The Princess and the Frog. And yeah, it all stems from the rich heritage of golden age classics, like early Mickey Mouse reels, Snow White, Looney Tunes, and Sleeping Beauty. But the late 1970s brought a “dark age,” when animation studios were shut down, artists fired, projects canceled, and the medium itself was thought to be dead. That’s where the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty steps in, telling the true story of how animation, and the love for the art, was brought back to life by a group including Roy Disney (of Disney family fame), John Lasseter (Pixar, Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up, Wall-E, etc.) Tim Burton (Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Alice in Wonderland, etc.), and Don Bluth (An American Tail, The Land Before Time, The Secret of NIMH, etc.) and dozens of others. Together, they brought us the Disney Renaissance, revived the entire industry with new classics like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. On March 26th, in select theaters, you’ll get to see the story for yourself. But for now, check out the trailer! (more… )

Speedy Gonzales speeds to the big screen
The classic Looney Tunes character, Speedy Gonzales, is headed to the big screen in his own feature film. The mouse speedster, notably smaller than Warner Bros.’ other fast-moving icon, RoadRunner, will dazzle his way into theaters, with comedian George Lopez providing the voice. New Line Cinema plans the movie as a mix of live-action and CG animation, creating a hybrid in style similar to the Chipmunks movies. Speedy debuted in the 1950s as a regular nemesis of Sylvester the Cat, and even won an Academy Award in 1955 for best short subject with a toon simply named “Speedy Gonzales”. He’s last been seen in the movies “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” “Space Jam”, and “Looney Tunes: Back in Action.” (more… )
