The Smurfs get Papercutz to debut The Purple Smurf

The Smurfs; lovable, joyful little critters who gleefully sing the day away. Seems like the perfect little symbol of happiness, right? Well, now imagine that one of them is all twisted and evil and bitter – and most alarmingly, a blue-less purple. Then he bites another Smurf, turning him the same kind of evil and purple. Then another. And another. Soon, it’s a whole horde of zombie-like evil Smurfs, aiming to take over all of Smurfkind. Horrifying, right?? Well, such is the tale of The Purple Smurf, or as it was originally known in France, Les Schtroumpfs Noirs. It’s an epidemic even couldn’t have dreamed up, and one only Papa Smurf could figure a way out of. The original story was released by Peyo, nearly 50 years ago, then animated in the Saturday morning toon some 20 years ago, and replayed on Cartoon Network’s Boomerang about 5 years ago. Now, Papercutz is re-releasing the original graphic novel in English for the first time, along with other Smurf adventures, like The Smurfs and the Magic Flute. With Sony and Columbia’s hybrid CG Smurfs movie due out next August, it looks like Smurf fever is spreading everywhere! Let’s just hope its not the purple kind. (more… )

Square Enix brings Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep to PSP this week

Ten years before the first Kingdom Hearts game, the world of Disney, and the Land of Departure, is a much different place. Terra, Aqua, and Ventus are close friends, training under Master Eraqus as Keyblade-wielders. Through the adventures of Birth By Sleep, this trio runs against Xehanort and Vanitas, other Keyblade Masters, as well as the Unversed; creatures who feed from negative emotions. Dark and twisted, but could you expect anything less from Square Enix? The game, which has been selling like hotcakes in Japan since January, hits Sony PSPs across the English-speaking world this week: September 7th in the U.S., and September 10th across Europe. Exciting to Disney fans, the game includes numerous characters, including King Mickey, Yen Sid, Donald Duck, Goofy, Maleficent, and Pete, as well as Zack Fair and Moogles from the Final Fantasy games. Marvel picks a new Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield thwips for Disney and Columbia

Spider-Man has found a new face to wear beneath the mask! Andrew Garfield has been cast as the new Peter Parker and Spidey in the next installment of the Marvel super franchise. Along with Disney and Columbia Pictures, Marvel welcomes in the twenty-six year old, who replaces the former title-holder, Tobey Maguire. It’s been 5 months since Tobey got the boot (the web?) with reportedly just 2 years until “A.G.” makes his debut in theaters, with the latest Spider-Man film to launch July 3rd, 2012 – in Spidey-Sense 3D, of course. Filming begins later this year, written by James Vanderbilt and directed by the appropriately named Marc Webb. (more… )

The Smurfs get global icons Smurf'd

Sony Animation has a lot to live up to with next year’s The Smurfs movie. The hybrid adventure will bring the lovable, and blue, Smurfs all the way into New York City, where they’ll no doubt have to interact with regular human folks, far away from their magical mushroom village. And, certainly, where there are Smurfs, can’t be too far behind! But it appears there may be a bit more magic involved (maybe that of Papa Smurf?) as the show’s famous global icons getting Smurf’d! The Eiffel Tower, Mount Rushmore, the Sphinx in Epypt, etc. All of them, Smurf’d in a big way! …er, little way! Go ahead, check out the Smurf’d stuff! (more… )

First look at Sony's 3D epic The Smurfs Movie

Finally, we can get our first look at the Smurfs, fully rendered and animated, just as they’ll appear in Columbia and Sony Animation’s upcoming 3D film, The Smurfs. For over 50 years, Peyo’s little blue creations have been a mainstay of comic books and television. But now, as evidenced in the teaser below, and introduced by one of the stars Neil Patrick Harris, we can see how the hybrid of live action will mesh with the computer animated Smurfs. It will be the first time the Smurfs have been in theaters since The Smurfs and the Magic Flute in 1983. Except this time, if we’re to believe the clip, the blue folks will be doing battle with Gargamel in Manhattan, the heart of New York City. Check it out, and let us know what you think! (more… )

This year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo has been a hot one thus far, especially if you’re a long time cartoon fan like us! Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep September 7th

Although the game was supposed to arrive a bit earlier, the latest chapter in the Square Enix Kingdom Hearts franchise, Birth by Sleep, has received an official release date in the US of September 7th. The game has been out for a few months already in Japan, and will also appear in European markets later this year. The game, designed for Sony’s PSP and PSP-3000 systems, anticipates as much success as the recent Nintendo DS chapter Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, bringing out some big guns for voice actors, including Mark Hamill, Willa Holland, Jesse McCartney, James Woods and Leonard Nimoy.
