Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back in theaters, courtesy of Iron Man
It’s been 17 long years since we’ve had a live-action TMNT flick on the big screen. Back in the early 1990s, the films were rapid-fire; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hit in 1990, the sequel The Secret of the Ooze debuted in 1991, and then Turtles in Time in 1993. Since then, nothing. Sure, there was that cool CG Turtles flick from a few years back, and Turtles Forever, the made-for-theaters-no-wait-TV film from last year, but no live-action adventure in nearly two decades. However, with Nickelodeon grabbing the property from 4Kids, there’s been almost non-stop “live action movie” rumors. Whether that was through Michael Bay, or the latest buzz regarding the Paramount and Platinum Dunes production; that Art Marcum and Matt Holloway are behind it, the same folks who gave us Marvel’s Iron Man. Maybe all hope is not lost? If it happened, would you head to theaters with your three best, pizza-loving friends day one to check it out? (more… )

Now, we’ve been hearing bits and pieces about a reboot to the live-action movies from the 90s, and today’s gossip is a big one: Michael Bay, of Transformers fame, will be heading up production. Peter Laird, famed TMNT co-creator, has been working with folks behind the scenes on getting the right fit for the upcoming films. Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures have now ensured Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes is on the fast track for the spot, hoping to take Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo back to the big screen with live action style. We’ll be sure to save the pizza, boys! (more… )

We first announced the Turtles Forever project about two months ago on ToonBarn; only weeks before we had to undo our news and announce it’s cancellation. Now, the good news continues as we learn Turtles Forever is back on track! Only this time, it’s not fit for theaters: Turtles Forever will air on CW4Kids next weekend, on November 21st. Nickelodeon now has Turtle Power
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now have a new home. TMNT has long since been associated with The Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment, but those days are long gone as the boys are now headed to their new home at Viacom’s Nickelodeon. As part of the deal, the animated series will continue to air on CW4Kids through next summer, but future series will all be up to Nickelodeon — maybe even Turtles Forever. In addition to the toons, the deal also includes all toys, video games, clothes, accessories, etc. Nick has even already announced plans to develop a new CG animated TMNT series, hoping to hit Nickelodeon airwaves in 2010. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael … we’ll see you on the other side!

Turtles Forever, actually never
About two weeks ago, ToonBarn reported that every TMNT fan across the universe would witness the shell-ebration of a lifetime: Turtles Forever, a movie featuring every generation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles teaming up across the big screen. It was a fitting tribute to the Turtles on their 25th anniversary. But now, there is only shell-shock, as it appears the project has been cancelled! After seeking official comment, ToonBarn was told “Due to unforeseen circumstances this event will not be shown in theatres. Unfortunately, 4Kids Entertainment and Mirage Studios were unable to reach an agreement with Fathom Entertainment” Surely, this was the work of Krang, the robot and human Foot Clan, Beebop, Rocksteady, and every version of the Shredder! October 29th will come and go with no theatrical presentation, but perhaps TMNT Forever will move to TV or DVD. We’ll keep digging for you, so stay TOONed! In the meantime, check out the alternate poster to what could have been Turtles Forever after the break.
