4Kids brings Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's: Road to Destiny around the globe

Yu-Gi-Oh! has long since become one of the most popular franchises of all time, launching first as the anime series in Japan. Since debuting in America, the phenomenon exploded, catching on as a trading card game (TCG), video games, books, posters, etc. The series even eventually broke out into sequels and other series, like Yu-Gi-Oh! Cartoons are sometimes created in one region of the world and later brought to others, making certain changes necessary; impacting different audiences, different beliefs, different languages, etc. It’s not an easy job, especially with us picky fans. 4Kids has been known to famously “Americanize” anime with a manga and Shonen Jump and background, like One Piece, and even European concepts, like Chaotic. These moves lead to endless debates over dubbing and scrubbing policies, starting long before One Piece, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh! In fact, it reaches through 70s and 80s classics like Voltron and even the Smurfs, and beyond. There is work on strong toons like Dinosaur King and Dragon Ball Z Kai. Some news sounds like forward momentum, some sounds scary. It’s not entirely clear what the future holds for the company whose legacy includes Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, Cabbage Patch Kids, Fox partnerships, CW partnerships, dubbing concerns, soft drink scandals, and more. The latest tidbit is the stock listing for 4Kids being removed from the New York Stock Exchange. Due to the company not meeting the minimum trade rate, NYSE is forced to make the move, giving 4Kids 10 days to review or appeal the decision. This doesn’t mean the company is closing, just that it will trade stocks in a traditional private fashion. Maybe there’s hidden good news in there, maybe not. What do you think? (more… )
