Funimation and Viz Media's Black Lagoon brings manga to anime

Since 2002, Japanese fans have enjoyed Rei Hiroe’s Black Lagoon series in vast quantity – so much so that the graphic novel quickly became an animated series. The toon rain for twelve episodes in the first season, and twelve more in season two. With hype still high in demand, a third season is now in production overseas to complete the novel adaptation. Viz Media then stepped in to introduce the English language version, along with Geneon Entertainment and Funimation Entertainment. A team of mercenaries, known as Lagoon Company, smuggles goods around Southeast Asia aboard a large boat named Black Lagoon. To accomplish their tasks, the team takes on a variety of missions, with often over-the-top violent results – which makes for some great animation! The Dating Guy is set to splash on Teletoon at Night

There are not that many cartoons on TV that we would categorize as strictly “adult” cartoons. Outside of the world of movies or , I mean toons with a regular schedule. Family Guy, the , and South Park certainly have their moments. Comedy Central’s Drawn Together is likely the the best candidate for the role of “kids shouldn’t be watching this” type of cartoon. Well, Marblemedia’s Dating Guy kicks things up a notch, bringing Teletoon’s late night segment, Teletoon at Night (think Adult Swim on Cartoon Network) to a whole new level. The toon follows four 20 year olds; Mark, Woody, Sam, and VJ, as they explore the challenging world of dating and romance as it mixes into jobs, rent, and other daily struggles. Action Dad is Showcase for Kids' counter to traditional family fun

Liz Ramsey and her brother Mick have a seemingly normal life. Well, normal, except that their dad is a super secret action hero. Oh, and also, their mom is a super secret villain! Yes, the beloved married couple of Chuck Ramsey and Angela Ramsey includes a bit of chaos, with the two each working for competing agencies – S.H.H.H.H. (Super Hush Hush High-octane Heroics & Haberdashery) and ARGH. However, despite their opposing view points, they both agree on how important their kids are. Sure, Action Dad features the two shooting at each other with laser blasters and rocket launchers, but, in the end, it’s all for the children! There’s no stopping this family. The toon, from Showcase for Kids, is written by Star Wars: The Clone Wars writer Henry Gilroy, and is produced by Hawaii Film Partners and ToonZone Studios – the folks behind Ape Escape. (more… )

KidsCo and Inspidea introduce the world to Boo & Me

One continual enemy in the world of cartoons is Poachers. Whether its hunters in Tarzan, or the trackers from Princess and the Frog, cartoon audiences dislike any form of capturing animals. Thus, we can easily and instantly sympathize with Boo, a new orangutan character created by KidsCo and Inspidea in the upcoming animated series Boo & Me. We learned of the early stages of this series about a year and a half ago, and we’re just now getting ready to see the first showings. The lovable ape was rescued from hunters by Aiman and Yasmin, who themselves are always out to help nature and preserve the environment. Together, the group lives in a Malaysian nature reserve, learning something new every day to better the world. In support of the series, Malaysian Airlines is airing Boo & Me on select routes. But in addition to the barbecues and rousing welcome to football season, fans of Curious George can also say hello to the start of the fifth season, as PBS Kids launches all new episodes. Along with everyone’s favorite monkey, this season also includes Marco, an 8-year-old who befriends George, ready to teach him to Hispanic culture. The toon, which is based on the book series by Margret and H.A. Rey, is a production of Imagine Entertainment, WGBH Boston, and Universal Studios Family Productions. Luken Communications and RTV (aka Retro Television Network) has big plans for the upcoming year. The company aims to add a ton of content to a new network aimed at classic TV and animation fans. Luken has already inked a number of deals with Classic Media to start filling those gaps, for which Classic Media was more than happy to provide. Included in the mix are: Richie Rich, Casper, The Lone Ranger, Mr. Magoo, Secret of Isis, Zorro, Shazam, Lassie, Dick Tracy, and Fraidy Cat. Hasbro Studios has big plans for the upcoming launch of their new network, The Hub. The channel, a joint project along with Discovery channel set to launch on October 10, 2010, will be a cartoon fan’s dream, with dozens of classic and new animated series. Of special note will be a revival of two of the more famous franchises; Transformers and GI Joe will be reborn as Transformers: Prime and G.I. Joe: Renegades. Branded as renegades for crimes they did not commit, a heroic group of young G.I.s is forced to “turn fugitive” as they battle to clear their names, and expose the evil that is Cobra Industries — a seemingly benevolent mega-corporation covertly controlled by a rogues gallery intent on creating a New World Order. The all-star voice cast will include a lineup of Charlie Adler, Lee Majors, Clancy Brown, Jason Marsden, Johnny Messner, and Kevin Michael Richardson, to name a few. The Transformers have been around for thousands of years, in their time. In our time, we’ve had about 30 or so. In either time frame, they’re awesome. With the two recent Transformer films doing so well in theaters, and the revival of classic toons sparking (pun!) everyone’s interest, Discovery and Hasbro decided they’d take advantage of this for their new network, The Hub, and launch an all new series, Transformers Prime. The toon is built in the world of generation one, when Optimus Prime did regular battle with . They’ve even gone so far as bringing back many of the original voice actors from the 1980s toon for the definitive cartoon, including: Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Gina Torres, James Remer, Josh Keaton, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Markie Post.
